"I have long admired Frida Kahlo's art, and the more I have learned about her over the years, the more I admire her as a pioneer and feminist thinker. During her lifetime, Frida Kahlo faced severe discrimination as a woman artist and was often referred to as "the wife of the famous muralist Diego Rivera... who also painted." Since her death, Kahlo's esteem in the art world has grown considerably, partly due to changing attitudes about the role of women in society, but also, I think, largely because her paintings are so evocative and memorable. I love that Kahlo adopted, after a serious bus accident at the age of 18, the philosophy that art can help you overcome hardship and that you should use adversity as a source of energy and inspiration to grow spiritually and do good."
